Lehigh Northeast Cement proposes alternative fuel from paper mills

Lehigh Northeast Cement Co has submitted an application to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to modify its air emissions permit for its Glen Falls (NY) plant to allow the company to use an engineered fuel product from recycled paper mills as part of its fuel mix. The fuel, known as ‘raggertail,’ consists of 60 per cent plastic trimmings and 40 per cent paper and cardboard fibre, Lehigh Hanson reports. LafargeHolcim to co-process contaminated lime sludge at Theodore plant

Some 30,000t of arsenic-contaminated lime sludge will be removed from Dunbar, West Virginia, USA, and taken to the LafargeHolcim cement plant in Theodore, Alabama, for co-processing into cement. The sludge had been dumped in the area in the 1960s and earlier plans to ship it to Citrus County first met with resistance from local officials.

Fire put out at Martinsburg plant

Cementos Argos' Martinsburg cement plant in the USA called fire units after 15.51h yesterday after what was thought to have been an explosion on the site. The 167th National Guard along with fire engines from Martinsburg, South Berkley, Bedington, Baker Heights Washington County, and Black Creek Valley fought fires for more than two hours. The fire was under control by 18.44h, but officials did not leave the site until 20.05h. There were no reported injuries.

The US cement market received a note of caution this week with the PCA's latest forecast, which predicted a falling growth rate for cement consumption over the next two years. The Federal Reserve’s actions to gradually increase interest rates will slow construction sector activity, increase mortgage rates for residential buildings and impose higher borrowing costs for non-residential buildings, according to the PCA assessment.

PCA forecasts falling US cement consumption growth rate

The Portland Cement Association (PCA) Market Intelligence Group forecast for cement consumption over the next two years in the USA predicts a falling growth rate. Growth is expected to decelerate from 2.9 per cent this year to 2.6 per cent next year and further to 1.6 per cent in 2020. Cementos Argos reports 13% rise in 3Q net income

Cementos Argos revenues edged up 1.1 per cent to COP2218bn (US$692.6m) in the third quarter of 2018 from COP2194bn in the 3Q17. In terms of sales volumes, the company increased its cement sales by 2.2 per cent to 4.242Mt and ready-mix concrete (RMC) volumes by 1.3 per cent to 2.699Mm 3 in the quarter, reflecting improved dynamics in all regions. US and Puerto Rican markets expand 6% in August

Total shipments of Portland and blended cements in the USA and Puerto Rico increased by 5.8 per cent in August 2018 when compared with August 2017, according to the latest figures by the US Geological Survey (USGS). In the first eight months of 2018 deliveries rose 4.2 per cent YoY to 65.5Mt. Vicat optimistic for future growth

This week Vicat announced its 9M18 results with a 7.6 per cent growth in sales, while weaker exchange rates impacted on revenues. Parts of Europe and the US market had a positive effect on results, but Vicat found devaluation of the Turkish lira and production issues in Egypt slowing its progress.
