Cement production in Vietnam reached 80Mt in 2017, up six per cent on the year before, according to local press reports. This figure was recorded by the Department of Construction Material under the Ministry of Construction. Vietnam is expected to increase its supply glut in the run-up to 2020, according to Vietnam Net. By 2020 total domestic cement capacity is expected to reach 120-130Mta while domestic demand is forecast to increase by 5-6Mta to reach 82Mt by 2020. This would result in an oversupply of 36-47Mt. Vietnam exported 17.48Mta of cement and clinker worth US$613.3m in the first 11 months of this year, according to Vietnam News. This represents a 30.4 per cent increase in volume and a 20.2 per cent rise in value from the year-ago period. Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City has expressed concern of a potential shortage of cement and construction sand in 2020, according to the Saigon Times. Vietnam produced 77.9Mt of cement in the first 11 months of this year, representing a 6.6 per cent rise YoY, according to the latest data from the government-run General Statistics Office. In November alone, 8.9Mt of cement were produced. In 10M17 69Mt of cement left Vietnam’s cement plants. In 2016, domestic output stood at 78.6Mt, including 7.3Mt in December.
