Chile’s cement dispatches down 7% in 2020

Chilean cement deliveries increased by 14 per cent YoY to 389,488t in November 2020 from 341,721t in the equivalent month in 2019. This was followed by a 7.7 per cent uptick in December 2020 when dispatches rose to 364,925t from 338,720t in December 2019, according to the Chilean construction chamber, CChC. Cement consumption in Spanish has declined by 9.7 per cent to 13.288Mt in 2020, according to the country’s cement association, Oficemen. The drop was already apparent in January and February, but with the lockdown due the the COVID-19 pandemic, demand in March, April and May fell by more than 1.2Mta when compared with 2019. Peru cement market expands 12% YoY in December

Domestic dispatches in Peru increased 12 per cent YoY from 0.979Mt in December 2019 to 1.098Mt in December 2020, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. Cement production advanced 18 per cent YoY in December 2020 as Asocem members produced 1.077Mt of cement. Output in December 2019 was 0.916Mt. Cement price in Mali surges due to shortage

Cement is becoming an increasingly scarce product in Mali. As a result, prices have risen from XOF90,000/t to XOF125,000-130,000/t, according to MaliActu.  In 2019 Mali had a cement demand of around 2.8Mt, with future consumption underpinned by a need for infrastructure and high population growth. However, output from the country’s cement industry is only approximately 1Mta and wide-spread shortages have been reported.

Cement sales in Brazil advance 17% in December

Cement sales in Brazil totalled 4.7Mt, up 16.6 per cent YoY, according to the National Union of the Cement Industry (SNIC). However, per working day, sales declined 13.2 per cent to 208,400t when compared with the previous month. SNIC attributes the fall to uncertainties in the economy and civil construction in 2021. Cement sales in Puerto Rico increased 41 per cent YoY to 60,076t in December when compared with December 2019 when market offtake reached 42,594t, according to Puerto Rican Development Bank. Output from Cemex Puerto Rico and Argos San Juan Corp slipped 4.3 per cent YoY  to 41,686t in December 2020 from 43,581t in the year-ago period. Cement consumption in Bolivia edged up 0.8 per cent YoY to 382,944t in October 2020 from 379,781t in October 2019, according to Bolivia’s national statistics agency, INE. In the country’s largest market, La Paz, demand rose 12.1 per cent YoY to 101,185t while in Cochabamba, offtake was 2.9 per cent up YoY to 97,911t. Cement demand in Argentina has seen a 33.3 per cent rise to 976,939t in December 2020 from 732,734t in December 2019, according to AFCP, the country’s cement association. Cement deliveries in Switzerland, including Liechtenstein, slipped 3.1 per cent YoY to 1,002,614t in the 4Q20, down from 1,034,914t in the 4Q19, according to cemsuisse, the Swiss cement association. Cement demand in Morocco declined 0.8 per cent YoY to 1.18Mt in December 2020, according to the Ministry of Housing and Urbanism. Deliveries to the infrastructure segment increased 7.3 per cent YoY to 102,520t in December 2020, but offtake to the ready-mix concrete segment fell by 4.8 per cent YoY to 202,802t.
