Peru’s Unacem swings into profit in 4Q17

Unión Andina de Cementos reported a profit of PEN34.5m (US$10.7m) in the 4Q17. The result, which is a marked improvement when compared with the loss of PEN42.3m in the same period of the previous year, was driven by the progress of public and private works. The Peruvian producer’s billed cement shipments edged up to PEN1789.2m in 4Q17. Cost of sales during the quarter rose to PEN302.8m while financial expenses advanced to PEN60m.

December 2017 was a positive month for Peru's cement production and dispatches, although volumes remained insufficient to reverse the accumulated fall in 2017, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. Cement consumption in Peru totalled 0.902Mt in November, representing a 2.5 per cent YoY rise but a MoM drop of 2.5 per cent, according to Asocem, the country’s cement association. Cement demand in Peru increased 3.3 per cent MoM and 12.1 per cent YoY to 0.925Mt in October 2017, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. Total cement exports from Vietnam rose to 15.12Mt in the first 10 months of 2017, representing a 22.9 per cent YoY increase. The country’s export earnings were up 13.9 per cent when compared with the year-ago period, reaching US$532.4m, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Cementos Pacasmayo increased its deliveries of cement, concrete and blocks by 4.8 per cent YoY in 3Q17 due to a higher level of self-construction activity and the recovery in public spending towards the end of the quarter. Cement consumption in Peru advanced 3.8 per cent YoY from 0.82Mt in September 2016 to 0.851Mt one year later, according to data from Asocem, the country's cement association. Peru’s cement association, Asocem, reported a 2.3 per cent YoY rise in domestic deliveries from 0.838Mt in August 2016 to 0.857Mt in August 2017. Cement imports remained largely stable at 43,800t while clinker imports reached 86,000t. Peru’s cement dispatches edged up 0.6 per cent YoY to 0.777Mt in July 2017, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. Domestic supply was supplemented by 100t of imported cement and 44,400t of imported clinker. Output from the country’s cement plants fell 1.2 per cent YoY to 0.827Mt in July. Peru’s cement producers dispatched 777,000t of cement in June 2017, representing a 2.2 per cent increase YoY, according to the latest data from Asocem, the country’s cement association.
