Argentina reports upturn in cement demand in August

Cement dispatches in Argentina increased by 6.7 per cent YoY in August, according to preliminary figures published by the Argentine cement association, AFCP. The domestic market required the supply of 1,042,862t, up from 977,469t in August 2015. Cimpor's first-half turnover dropped by 31.1 per cent to EUR897.3m, while EBITDA declined by 39.1 per cent to EUR170.1m. The amortisation and provision charge jumped from EUR100.6m to EUR527.9m as a result of a EUR433m good-will impairment charge relating to Brazil. Cementos Avellaneda to invest in Canuelas logistics centre

Argentina’s Cementos Avellaneda will invest in a logistics centre in Canuelas. The company, which is a joint venture between Votorantim Cimentos and Cementos Molins, acquired a 9000m 2 plot in an industrial complex alongside Route 6. Initial plans are to build a 1500m 2 warehouse, an office and a truck parking area. During a second stage, the company has the option to build a concrete plant.

In July Argentina's cement demand fell 20.7 per cent YoY from 1,069,622t in July 2015 to 847,684t and slipped 1.1 per cent from the 857,525t recorded in June, according to the country cement association, AFCP. Argentina’s cement demand contracted 18.8 per cent YoY in June 2016 to 857,525t from 1,055,434t in June 2015 and by 2.7 per cent MoM from 881,663t in May 2016, according to data from domestic cement association, AFCP. Dispatches from Argentina’s cement plants rose by 16.5 per cent in May 2016 after a six consecutive months of decreases. Argentina’s cement market contracted 27.6 per cent YoY in April 2016, according to the latest data from Asociación de Fábricas de Cemento Portland (AFCP). Total cement sales, including exports, fell 31 per cent during the period. The fall in domestic sales has been attributed to the economic recession and the decision by the government to delay key infrastructure works. Cementos Molins SA, Spain, the main stakeholder in Argentina's Cementos Avellaneda, said on Monday it plans to invest US$189mn to expand production at the company's local facilities. Argentina’s cement demand fell 7.5 per cent YoY and eight per cent MoM to 858,453t in January 2016, according to figures published by AFCP, the country’s cement association. Exports plunged by nearly 74 per cent YoY from 16,589t in January 2015 to 4334t, the data also showed.
