Moroccan deliveries up 7% in May

Cement deliveries in Morocco increased 7.1 per cent YoY to 945,706t in May 2022 from 882,785t in May 2021, according to Ipsos. The data relates to APC members Asment Temera, Ciments de l’Atlas, Ciments du Maroc and LafargeHolcim Maroc. However, in the year to date deliveries contracted by 3.1 per cent to 5,276,337t when compared with January-May 2021 when deliveries reached 5,446,117t.

Lafarge Egypt and Lumika sign US$93m solar power pact

Holcim-owned Lafarge Egypt has signed a US$93m long-term agreement with Lumika Renewables Egypt, part of the AP Moller Egypt, to generate 140GWh of solar energy annually, according to Mist News. The two companies will establish a new 50MW power plant – the first plant owned by Lumika in Egypt. The plant will enable Lafarge to use clean energy for 50 per cent of its cement works’ energy consumption. The agreement comes into force by the first quarter of 2024.

Morocco’s market contracts 23% in April

Moroccan cement deliveries by Asment Temara ( Votorantim Cimentos ), Ciments de l'Atlas ( Addoha Group ), Ciments du Maroc ( HeidelbergCement Group ) and LafargeHolcim Maroc ( Holcim ) contracted by 22.8 per cent to 902,513t in April 2022 when compared with 1,169,122t in April 2021, according to Morocco’s cement association, APC. In the first four months of 2022 cement deliveries slipped by 5.1 per cent YoY to 4.331Mt from 4.563Mt in the January-April 2021 period.

Carthage Cement improves 1Q cement exports

Tunisia-based Carthage Cement has improved its export turnover in the first quarter of 2022. Exports were up 32 per cent YoY to TND65m (US$21.8m). The company’s total turnover reached TND83.9m, up 3.4 per cent when compared with the 1Q21. The increase was achieved despite a challenging building and public works market. Cement deliveries in Morocco declined seven per cent YoY to 1,188,217t in March 2022 from 1,277,221t according to data published by the Ministry of Housing and Urbanisation. Egypt-based Sinai Cement Co , owned by Vicat , reported a 61.9 per cent increase in sales to EGP1.44bn (US$78.8m) in 2021 when compared with 2020 when the company sold to a value of EGP889.2m. The company also narrowed its loss to EGP354m in 2021 from EGP560.3m in 2020.

Holcim -owned Lafarge Algérie has exported nearly 0.9Mta of cement and clinker in the first quarter of 2022. The volume represents an 87 per cent rise when compared with the 1Q21, when 482,000t of products were exported.
