Cement sales in Brazil advance 17% in December

Cement sales in Brazil totalled 4.7Mt, up 16.6 per cent YoY, according to the National Union of the Cement Industry (SNIC). However, per working day, sales declined 13.2 per cent to 208,400t when compared with the previous month. SNIC attributes the fall to uncertainties in the economy and civil construction in 2021. Bolivian cement market expands 1% in October

Cement consumption in Bolivia edged up 0.8 per cent YoY to 382,944t in October 2020 from 379,781t in October 2019, according to Bolivia’s national statistics agency, INE. In the country’s largest market, La Paz, demand rose 12.1 per cent YoY to 101,185t while in Cochabamba, offtake was 2.9 per cent up YoY to 97,911t. Cement demand in Argentina has seen a 33.3 per cent rise to 976,939t in December 2020 from 732,734t in December 2019, according to AFCP, the country’s cement association. The Colombian cement market expanded 3.6 per cent to 1.122Mt in November 2020 when compared with 1.083Mt in November 2019, according to the country’s statistics office, DANE. Capeco, the Peruvian construction chamber, reported that the average retail price for grey cement in Peru is around US$6.22 per 42.5kg bag – one of the lowest in Latin America. The highest price is paid in Argentina, where a bag of cement costs on average US$12.34, followed by Nicaragua, Uruguay, Guatemala and Paraguay, where a bag of cement costs around US$10. LafargeHolcim has announced the definitive closure of the Yocsina plant in Córdoba’s Industrial Zone, Argentina, to focus its activity in Malagueño from 31 March 2021. The cement plant Cementos Concepcion (Cecon) is currently under construction in Paraguay and is designed to produce over 1Mta from June 2022, when it is due to begin operations. Cecon recently launched an investment vehicle of over US$200m (EUR163.18m) to finance the project. Cecon already has two concrete factories in Limpio. The new cement unit is set to eliminate the country's cement deficit.

Cement dispatches in Peru rose 15.6 per cent YoY in November 2020 to 1.188Mt from 1.028Mt in November 2019, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. Of the total, 1.092Mt were supplied by Asocem members.
