Cement consumption in Argentina declined 7.8 per cent MoM to 874,187t in May 2021 but surged 34.8 per cent YoY from 648,543t in May 2020, according to AFCP, the national cement association. Market demand was entirely supplied by domestic cement plants, which produced 884,204t of cement in May 2021. Colombia’s grey cement market expanded by 333.5 per cent in April 2021 as demand reached 1.051Mt, according to the country’s statistics agency, DANE. In April 2020 consumption fell to 242,400t as demand contracted sharply due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cementos Concepción (Cecon) in Paraguay has completed around 70 per cent of the civil engineering works at its new plant, according to Esmerk Latin American News. The 1.03Mta plant is located in Concepción, San Lázaro, south of Vallemí. The US$200m project is expected to start production in August 2022.

Holcim Argentina inaugurates US$120m new line

Holcim Argentina has inaugurated a new line at its Malagueño plant in Cordoba, following an investment of around US$120m. The project included the construction of a new kiln line, a state-of-the-art vertical roller mill and a dispatch centre. Chilean cement consumption saw a 12 per cent YoY hike to 385,276t in March 2021 when compared with March 2020, when demand reached 344,098t, according to the Chilean Chamber of Construction (CChC). When compared with February 2021, consumption edged up by 9.5 per cent. In the first quarter of 2021 demand was up 7.5 per cent to 1.083Mt, compared with 1.008Mt in the 1Q20, which had seen a 6.7 per cent drop vs 1Q19.

Brazilian cement sales surged 26.5 per cent YoY to 5.3Mt in April, according to the domestic cement association, SNIC. Argentina’s Loma Negra has seen its net revenue surge 35.4 per cent YoY to ARS13,175m (US$143m) in the first quarter of 2021, against ARS9734m in the year-ago period, mainly on the back of strong results from its cement segment.
