Manaus cement plants face watchdog warning

Two cement plants in Manaus, Brazil, have received warnings from Procon, the consumer watchdog in the state of Amazonas. The organisation has requested clarification regarding prices charged since March 2020. Cement dispatches in Colombia fell 1.8 per cent YoY to 1.093Mt in July 2020 from 1.113Mt in July 2019, according to the country’s statistics office, DANE. Offtake by ready-mix concrete companies declined 17.5 per cent, but retail sales were up 6.5 per cent when compared with July 2019. Brazil-based Votorantim Cimentos has awarded Aumund the contract for the replacement of a pan conveyor at its Xambioá plant in Tocantins, Brazil. Argentina-based Loma Negra (Intercement) has sold its 51 per cent majority stake in Paraguay’s Yguazú Cementos. The value of the deal was not announced, but the company had been valued at US$80m. Chilean cement market contracts 14% in 6M20

Cement dispatches in Chile fell 15.4 per cent YoY in May 2020 to 291,781t from 345,001t in May 2019, according to the Chilean Chamber of Construction (CChC). In June the market continued to contract, with sales down 26.9 per cent YoY to 213,502t from 291,979t in June 2019. In the first six months of 2020 demand in the South American country declined 13.7 per cent YoY to 1,781,388t from 2,065,205t in the 6M19.

Cementos Pacasmayo begins terminal operations

Peru’s Cementos Pacasmayo has resumed operations from the port terminal of Yurimaguas, Loreto, distributing 60,000 bags of cement to Iquitos. The company operates in the port through its subsidiary, Cementos Selva, which has a 4.9Mta plant in Rioja. The operations were launched in mid-August with the arrival of several vessels, which will set sail for Iquitos while complying with all COVID-19 safety protocols.

Yguazu stops production due to transformer issues

Paraguay’s Yguazu Cement stated on social media that it stopped production on 12 August 2020 due to an issue with a transformer. The producer continued dispatching cement until 14 August 2020, when its supplies ran out. While it has not yet been able to find a similar transformer locally, it may either rent generators or even import cement, according to reports. The news follows the country’s construction sector recently reporting a cement shortage .
