Tunisia-based Carthage Cement has reported a 22 per cent rise in its revenues in the fourth quarter of 2020. Domestic sales were up 19 per cent YoY. Clinker export sales recovered to reach TND3.5m (US$1.3m) while cement exports brought in revenues of TND3.2m. Tunisia-based Ciments de Bizerte announced it is resuming bulk cement exports by sea from the Port of Bizerte. The first ship was loaded with bulk cement destined for the Libyan market. The company has invested in new loading and unloading facilities.

Carthage Cement sees reduced COVID-19 impact on 3Q results

Tunisia-based Carthage Cement reported a less severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on its turnover in the third quarter of 2020. The company’s turnover fell by six per cent to TND172m (US$63m) from TND183m in the 3Q19. In the 2Q20 turnover had fallen by 16 per cent due to the pandemic. Tunisia’s Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mines has repealed its joint order with the Ministry of Commerce that authorises the packaging of cement in plastic bags. The decision has been submitted to the Presidency of Governmnet for publication in the Official Journal of the Republic of Tunisia.

Tunisia’s government approved the use of polypropylene for packaging cement, but the move has already drawn ire of the country’s environmentalists and the Tunisian Industrial Paper and Cardboard Co (Sotupapier). Carthage Cement posted a net profit of TND3.3m (US$1.2m) as of 31 July 2020, despite at two-month shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tunisia looks to change cement packaging and reduce costs

Salah Ben Youssef, Tunisia’s Minister of Industry and Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises, has stated that by replacing 30 per cent of Kraft paper bags used in cement packaging with polypropylene bags, the equivalent of TND20m (US$7.37m) in foreign currency would be saved.   "This will help Tunisia reposition itself on the Libyan market by bringing down the cost of cement bags and increasing the competitiveness of Tunisian products against the Turkish competitors," said Mr Youssef. Ciments de Bizerte sees 1H turnover up 2%

Tunisian cement producer Ciments de Bizerte has seen its total turnover expand 1.6 per cent YoY to TND42.781m (US$15.6m) in the first half of 2020. Domestic turnover edged up 0.2 per cent YoY to TND40.112m while export turnover improved 26.8 per cent YoY to TND2.669m. Tunisia-based Carthage Cement has seen its revenues fall 16 per cent to TND102m (US$37m) in the 1H20 due to the stoppage of its operations between 28 March and 28 April 2020.
