Argentina's cement market contracts 47% in March

Cement demand in Argentina fell 46.5 per cent to 502,541t in March 2020 when compared to March 2019 when consumption reached 940,167t, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. Cement deliveries by APC members in Morocco fell 28.7 per cent YoY to 910,995t in March 2020 when compared with 1,278,486t in March 2019, according to market research company, IPSOS. The building sector was particularly hit with a 44.7 per cent YoY drop to 42,912t, but the retail and prefabricated segments also noted declines of 30 per cent to 582,738t and 78,214t, respectively. Cement dispatches in Colombia increased 5.3 per cent YoY to 1.025Mt in February 2020, according to the Colombian statistics office, DANE. In February 2019 dispatches reached 0.973Mt. Growth was particularly strong in the builders and contractors segment, which saw a 10.8 YoY expansion. National cement demand in Peru advanced 5.3 per cent in February 2020 to 0.935Mt when compared with February 2019, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. In the first two months of the year, 11.78Mt of cement was consumed, up 4.8 per cent YoY. Total cement sales in Vietnam reached 4.207Mt in February 2020, up 58 per cent YoY and 47 per cent MoM, according to the Vietnam National Cement Association (VNCA). The total includes 1.383Mt delivered by VICEM, representing an increase of 48 per cent YoY and 53 per cent MoM. Cement demand in Spain slipped 0.5 per cent YoY to 1,171,084t in February 2020, according to Oficemen, the country’s cement association. Cement sales in Brazil remained stable at 4.1Mt in February 2020 when compared with February 2019, according to the country’s cement association, SNIC. When compared with January 2020, when sales were weak, there is a 0.5 per cent drop. Cement consumption in Russia increased eight per cent to 57.8Mt in 2019, according to the country’s cement association, Soyuzcement. Exports by Russian producers expanded by 9.6 per cent YoY to 1.1Mt in 2019 on the back of rising volumes to export markets, which include Azerbaijan, the Baltic states, Belarus and Kazakhstan. Cement sales in Puerto Rico declined 20.4 per cent YoY to 36,255t. The drop in demand was attributed to falling levels of construction after Hurricane Maria as government funds and insurance payment finish, according to Sin Comillas. Cement production in January dropped 17.1 per cent to 35,176t, the first reduction in three months. In 2018 full-year output declined 6.7 per cent YoY to 524,443t.
