Cement demand in Argentina remained largely stable YoY at 921,112t in February 2019, but fell 5.4 per cent MoM, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. Cement demand in France rose by an estimated 2.5 per cent to 18.6Mt in 2018, according to SFIC, the country’s cement association. In 2017 the market expanded by 4.5 per cent. The US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has reached a US$506,250 settlement with ZAG International, based in Newtown (CT), for illegally sourcing clinker from Iran. Between 11 July 2014-15 January 2015, ZAG International purchased 263,563t of Iranian-origin clinker via a supplier in the UAE, which was then resold by the company to a customer in Tanzania. Armenia’s government is taking measures to protect domestic cement producers from competition by cement producers in neighbouring countries. Cement demand in Peru increased to 1.022Mt in January 2019, according to the latest figures by the country’s cement association, Asocem. This represents a YoY rise of 9.8 per cent from 0.931Mt reported in January 2018. Cement demand in Argentina fell 16.3 per cent to 873,958t in January 2018, when compared with 1,043,732t in January 2017, according to the latest data from the Argentinian cement association, AFCP. Domestic cement sales in Brazil totalled 4.5Mt in January 2019, according to the National Union of the Cement Industry (SNIC). When compared with January 2018, the latest data reflect an advance of 4.2 per cent. In terms of days worked, domestic sales advanced 2.5 per cent MoM. Tasman Sea to complete clinker offloading at Suva

Bulk carrier Tasman Sea is expected to complete the offloading of 11,880t of clinker at Suva Port, Fiji, today, according to the Fiji Sun. The clinker has been exported from Japan, which became a clinker importer into Fiji a year ago. The ship finished discharging 15,000t of clinker for the Tengy Cement Factory in Lautoka last week. The plant receives a clinker shipment every quarter.

US cement market expands 5% in October

Total Portland and blended cement deliveries in the USA and Puerto Rico advanced by 5.2 per cent YoY to 9.9Mt in October 2018, according to data by the US Geological Survey (USGS).
