Bolivia to prohibit poor-quality cement imports

Cement consumption in Peru rose by 4.8 per cent YoY in November to 1.017Mt, up from 0.971Mt in November 0217, according to the latest data from the country’s cement association, Asocem. Cement sales in the Brazilian market between January and November 2018 totalled 48.7Mt, representing a 1.2 per cent fall YoY, according to the National Union of the Cement Industry (SNIC). Apparent consumption of cement, which includes domestic sales plus imports, slipped 1.5 per cent YoY to 49Mt. Azerbaijan hits record high in cement production

Azerbaijan has produced over 3.2Mta of cement in the first 11 months of the year, a record amount in the entire history of building materials in the country, according to Turan Information Agency. Representing a 21.1 per cent YoY increase, it has been attributed to government policies which stimulate local production and see high import duties on cement. In 2017 the country produced 2.954Mta of cement at a value of AZN265.5m (US$156.49m).

Rock Hard Cement loses import tariff judgement

The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) has ruled in favour of Trinidad Cement Ltd (TCL) and Arawak Cement Ltd over their dispute with importer Rock Hard Cement to have the tariff remain at 60 per cent for imported hydraulic cement to Barbados, rather than being lowered to five per cent. The court is still to determine the classification guidelines for hydraulic cement that Rock Cement imports for its local operations in Barbados.

CeMAP supports DTI safeguards against rising imports

Argentina’s cement consumption fell 17.8 per cent to 970,248t in November 2018 when compared with 1.18Mt in November 2017.
