Dominican Republic cement market expands 5% in 1H19

Cement sales in the Dominican Republic increased 5.2 per cent YoY in the January-June 2019 period, according to the country’s cement association, Adocem. Output from domestic cement plants rose by 2.7 per cent YoY to 2.812Mt in the same period. For the full-year, forecasts indicate that cement production will increase by eight per cent YoY to 4.8Mt in 2019. Dominican Republic exports US$72.3m of cement in 2018

The Dominican Republic exported Portland cement to the value of US$72.3m in 2018, according to the country’s Director of General Direction of Mining, Alexander Medina Herasme. The country produces cement in four clinker and two grinding plants with a combined capacity of 7.15Mt. It is the Caribbean’s largest cement and clinker exporter, accounting for around two-thirds of the region’s cement exports.

The president of the Cibao Housing Promoters and Builders Association, Anthony Canaan, has denounced a 43 per cent price hike in cement prices in the Dominican Republic, according to the Dominican Today. Cementos Argos set a new cement production record in the Dominican Republic. The cement mill at its Nayajo plant in San Cristóbal produced 50,194t of cement, the highest production in its 20 years of operation. The cement works has a cement capacity of 0.542Mta.

Cement producers in the Dominican Republic expect to see cement sales increase 4.1 per cent YoY by the end of the year, according to the Dominican Association of Producers of Cement Portland (ADOCEM).
