Thai companies have spent around US$600m acquiring assets in Vietnam even as the country’s cement producers face shrinking export markets and tougher domestic competition, Vietnam Net reports. Vietnam exported 2.95Mt of cement and clinker in the first two months of 2017, representing an increase of 18.7 per cent YoY. The total value of the shipments reached US$103.69m, up 13.2 per cent YoY, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs. Vietnam sold 9.4Mt of cement in the first two months of 2017, representing a 0.4 per cent decrease when compared with January-February 2016, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Construction. The total included 6.8Mt of domestic sales, down 2.7 per cent YoY, and 2.6Mt of clinker and cement exports, a rise of 20.9 per cent YoY. Siam City Cement renames Holcim's former Vietnam operations

Siam City Cement Public Co Ltd (SCCC), Thailand’s second-largest cement producer, announced it will rename its Holcim Vietnam Co into Siam City Cement Vietnam. SCCC signed an agreement in August 2016 to buy LafargeHolcim’s entire 65 per cent stake in LafargeHolcim Vietnam for US$890m. SCCC recently embarked on a strategy of building a regional asset footprint. The cement producer has already established operations in Indonesia, Cambodia and Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Vietnam exported 14.73Mt of cement in 2016, down 7.1 per cent YoY, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs. Export revenues fell 16 per cent YoY to US$561m. In December the country exported 1.31Mt of cement and clinker to the value of US$50.58m, increasing 7.7 per cent and 10.4 per cent MoM in volume and value, respectively.
