Vietnam output up 8.1%

Vietnam produced 33.6Mt of cement in the first five months of this year, up 8.1 per cent from a year earlier, including 7.7Mt in May, up 12.1 per cent, according to latest data of the government-run General Statistics Office. In the first four months, Vietnamese cement producers manufactured 25.9Mt of cement, according to the office’s revised figure. In 2016 they produced 78.6Mt of cement, including 7.3Mt in December, according to the revised figure.  (Source: Vietnam News Brief Service)

Vietnam April exports up 6.7%

Vietnam exported more than 1.9Mt of cement and clinker, reflecting an export value of US$67.4m, according to the country’s Customs Department. This represents a YoY increase of 6.7 and 7.6 per cent, respectively. In the first four months of the year, the country exported 6.7Mt of cement and clinker, up 12.8 per cent YoY. Vietnam exported 4.82Mt of cement and clinker worth US$168.65m in the first quarter of this year, representing 11 per cent increase YoY in volume and 6.4 per cent in value, according to the latest data of the General Department of Vietnam Customs. The Prime Minister of Vietnam, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, has used a meeting with the head of Siam Cement Group to urge the company to expand its activities within the country. Nine Vietnamese seafarers are listed as missing following a collision involving a clinker carrying ship off Vietnam’s southern coast on Tuesday morning. Thai companies have spent around US$600m acquiring assets in Vietnam even as the country’s cement producers face shrinking export markets and tougher domestic competition, Vietnam Net reports. Vietnam exported 2.95Mt of cement and clinker in the first two months of 2017, representing an increase of 18.7 per cent YoY. The total value of the shipments reached US$103.69m, up 13.2 per cent YoY, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs. Vietnam sold 9.4Mt of cement in the first two months of 2017, representing a 0.4 per cent decrease when compared with January-February 2016, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Construction. Siam City Cement renames Holcim's former Vietnam operations

Siam City Cement Public Co Ltd (SCCC), Thailand’s second-largest cement producer, announced it will rename its Holcim Vietnam Co into Siam City Cement Vietnam. SCCC signed an agreement in August 2016 to buy LafargeHolcim’s entire 65 per cent stake in LafargeHolcim Vietnam for US$890m. SCCC recently embarked on a strategy of building a regional asset footprint. The cement producer has already established operations in Indonesia, Cambodia and Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
