Kenyan consumption contracts in 5M17

Cement demand in Kenya over the Jan-May 2017 period fell to 2.5Mt compared to 2.5Mt a year earlier, according to the latest data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS). Manufacturers also cut back on production in the first half of the year, from 3.31Mt to 3.18Mt. NIC Securities attributes the decline to a slowdown in private sector credit growth following discussions with management of cement firms.

Morocco July sales see 42% hike

Cement sales in Morocco increased 42 per cent in July, jumping to 1.2Mt, when compared with the year-ago period. The rise in sales has been attributed to “the resumption of self-construction, which represents 40 per cent of national demand, encouraged by the massive influx of Moroccans residing abroad,” according to L’Economiste. Argentine cement consumption edged up one per cent MoM and 19.8 per cent YoY in July 2017. Demand reached 1,016,590t. Imports surged from 982t in July 2016 to 8692t one year later. When compared with June 2017, they advanced 6.2 per cent from 8188t. Colombia’s cement sales slipped 1.3 per cent YoY to 0.984Mt in June 2017 when compared with the previous year, according to the country’s statistics office, DANE.  Ready-mix company offtake fell by 9.3 per cent and could not be offset by sales in the prefabricated segment, where sales increased 24.1 per cent and the building companies and contractors, which increased purchases by 1.9 per cent. Cement output in the country reached 1.003Mt, 0.9 per cent lower than in 6M16.

Peru's cement demand edges up in June

Peru’s cement producers dispatched 777,000t of cement in June 2017, representing a 2.2 per cent increase YoY, according to the latest data from Asocem, the country’s cement association. Steppe Cement reported a 15 per cent decline in volumes for the first half of 2017 while turnover was up by four per cent over the same period as the Kazakhstan-based producer focussed on pricing. Cement sales in Indonesia registered a slight decline over the first half of this year, while exports sales fared better over the six-month period, according to the latest industry data. Argentina’s cement market expanded 4.1 per cent MoM to 1,007,450t in June, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. When compared with June 2016, the increase reached 17.2 per cent.
