Outlook improving for Indonesia cement demand, clinker exports robust

Cement sales in Indonesia amounted to 65.501Mt in 2023. This is an increase of 3.4 per cent YoY compared to the 63.346Mt reported in 2022. Regional sales were a mixed bag, with over a third recording sale contractions. Java, the country’s largest market, saw sales rise a modest 0.3 per cent YoY to 33.56Mt, while sales in the capital Jakarta rose 5.5 per cent YoY to 2.714Mt. Turkey exports to Georgia up 7% in 1Q24

Turkey has increased its exports of cement products to Georgia by 6.8 per cent YoY to US$17m in the January-March 2024 period, according to the country’s Trade Ministry. However, exports to global markets were down by 7.4 per cent YoY to US$1.1bn in the 1Q24. In March alone, cement product exports to Georgia were up 4.4 per cent YoY to US$7.6m. On a global scale Turkey’s exports were down 1.1 YoY to US$390m.

Gloomy outlook for Germany's cement industry

The 2024 outlook for the German cement market is gloomy. According to the German Building Materials Association, Bundesverband Baustoffe, production of building materials contracted 15.3 per cent YoY in the first two months of 2024, adding to the 16.7 per cent YoY contraction recorded in 2023. Pakistan’s cement and clinker exports increased by 32.51 per cent in the 9MFY23-24 to US$179.47m (4.63Mt), compared to US$135.43m (2.90Mt) in the 9MFY22-23, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) said. Cement consumption in Ukraine rose by 17 per cent last year, up 5.4Mt compared to 2022, says Pablo Kachur, head of the country's cement association, Ukrcement Association. “A similar jump is not predicted this year, but we will probably get 6Mt of domestic cement consumption,” said the representative. Italian cement output started the year strongly, expanding 14 per cent YoY in January 2024, according to the Italian concrete association, Federbeton. Iranian cement consumption rose 15.2 per cent YoY in February 2024 to 4.93Mt, up from 4.28Mt, according to the Iranian cement association. Producers manufactured 5.13Mt of cement and 5.04Mt of clinker in February, an increase of 11.8 and 18.9 per cent, respectively, when compared with February 2023. Bangladesh recorded 48.7 per cent YoY growth in cement export revenue to US$14.39m in the first nine months of FY23-24 (July 2023-March 2024) from US$9.68m in the same corresponding months of the previous year, according to the Bangladesh Export Promotion Bureau (EPB). Kazakhstan-based Steppe Cement reported revenue of KZT3.779bn (US$8.4m) in the first quarter of 2024, down 23.5 per cent from KZT4.938bn in the year-ago period. The company's market share in Kazakhstan contracted to 11.5 per cent in the 1Q24 from 12.7 per cent in the 1Q23.
