Cement sales edged up to US$12.5bn in 2019, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). Of this total 70-75 per cent of sales were to ready-mixed concrete producers, 10 per cent to concrete product manufacturers, 8-10 per cent to contractors and 5-12 to other customers. Argentina’s cement market contracts 15% in January

Argentine cement consumption fell by 14.7 per cent YoY to 745,709t in January 2020, according to AFCP, the country’s cement association. The market was entirely supplied by domestic production and no imports were recorded. Output from Argentine cement plants reached 758,123t, down 14.3 per cent YoY from 884,363t in January 2018. Of this total, 12,414t were exported, representing a 19.6 per cent increase when compared with the year-ago period.

In 2019 total domestic cement production in Belarus increased 4.6 per cent YoY to 4.7Mt. Meanwhile, the country also imported 502,800t of cement worth more than US$28m, according to the National Statistical Committee. Peru’s cement market expanded by 1.6 per cent to 996,000t in December 2019, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. Saudi Arabian Cement has bought a stake in United Cement Co BSC of Bahrain from Esterad Investment Co for SAR23m (US$6.13m). Members of Costa Rica’s Legislative Assembly have called for the government to standardise municipal taxes on both local cement manufacturers and importers. In this case, a new five per cent tax would be imposed on all locally-produced and imported cement. Whereas, at present taxes are only applied on companies operating in San José, Cartago and Guanacaste.

Paraguayan companies import increasing cement volumes

Several companies in Paraguay have increased the volume of cement imports from 1000tpm to 6000tpd due to the cement supply shortage in the Latin American country, according to ABC Color.
