Cement imports into South Africa have surged by 293 per cent YoY in July and have also risen by 17.5 per cent since the start of the year. Demand for cement in Peru has increased 6.3 per cent YoY to 1.052Mt in August 2019 when compared with 0.989Mt in the year-ago period, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. Philippines announces new duty on imported cement

The Philippines’ Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) will impose a general safeguard duty on imported cement for a three-year period to protect domestic product. Dangote Cement is among five companies calling for an investigation into cement imports into South Africa. According to The Concrete Institute (ITC), imports have risen by 139 per cent since 2016. In the 2Q19, 350,441t of cement arrived in South Africa, the highest level since the 3Q15. Imports from Vietnam alone totalled 301,872t.
