Argentina’s cement market expanded by 18.2 per cent YoY but contracted 9.3 per cent MoM to 686,602t in February 2021, according to the country's cement association, AFCP. Argos recycles 7m cement bags

Since the start of its Sacos Verdes (Green Bags) initiative in 2013, Colombia’s Argos, has recycled 7m bags. This year alone, 15,910 bags were recycled. The company’s customers have returned more than 1000t of paper, representing the saving of more than 10,000 trees and 80,200m3 of water – sufficient to supply 472,000 people in one day. Due to the initiative, the company has employed more than 16,723 people in solid waste, bag management and cleaning, reports the company.

Cemento Melón expects to bring online Punta Arenas plant by June

Chile-based Cemento Melón expects to see its new US$30m Punta Arenas grinding plant to be commissioned by June 2021, reports La Prensa Austral. The plant is located 8.5km north of Punta Arenas in Chile’s most southern region and has a production capacity of 250,000tpa. Peruvian cement producer Unión Andina de Cementos (UNACEM) saw its revenues advance by 16.2 per cent YoY in the 4Q20, driven by a 14.5 per cent increase in dispatches in Peru with improved average prices as well higher cement and ready-mix deliveries in Ecuador. Cement consumption in Colombia slipped 0.3 per cent from 994,700t in January 2020 to 992,200t in January 2021, according to the country’s statistics office, DANE. Colombia's Cementos Argos has reported an adjusted EBITDA of COP448bn (US$125.66m) in the final quarter of 2020, an increase of 16.3 per cent YoY compared to COP385bn in the year-ago period. Chile-based Cemento Mélon has signed a contract with Enel Generación for the supply of clean and renewable energy in four of Mélon’s operations: the La Calera, Ventanas and Puerto Montt cement plants and the San Bernardo aggregates facility. Cement sales in Uruguay increased 34.6 per cent YoY to 251,000t in the fourth quarter of 2020, according to the country’s chamber of industry, CIU. Of this total, 89 per cent or 223,290t were delivered to the domestic market, which expanded by 44.1 per cent YoY to around 257,000t in the 4Q20 from 179,000t in the 4Q19. Bolivia-based cement company Fabrica Nacional de Cemento (Fancesa) has been awarded the US$72m contract to supply over 582,000t of cement needed to build Nueva Santa Cruz Ciudad Inteligente project in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
