While cement demand in Peru rebounded in June 2020 to 678,000t when compared with 298,000t sold in May 2020, it remained 26.1 per cent below demand reported in June 2019 as the impact of the coronavirus pandemic continue to be felt, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. Cement demand in Argentina has fallen 7.3 per cent YoY to 797,926t in June 2020, according to AFCP, the national cement association. However, MoM a 23 per cent advance was reported. Argentine cement producers supplied 804,727t of cement to the domestic and overseas market, representing a 6.9 per cent YoY decrease but a 23.2 per cent increase when compared with May 2020. Cement consumption in Bolivia has declined 34.2 per cent YoY in the 4M20 as a result of the quarantine imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Bolivian statistics agency, INE. Domestic dispatches of grey cement in Colombia fell by 33.1 per cent to 705,900t in May 2020 when compared with May 2019, when they stood at 1.055Mt, according to the country’s statistics office, DANE. In the Reserve Bank of Fiji’s economic review for June 2020, it has found domestic cement production to have fallen 28.7 per cent YoY in the 5M20. The results have been largely attributed to weak demand. Cumulative domestic cement sales also declined 18.8 per cent YoY in the year up to May 2020.

In the 5M20 Tajikistan produced over 1.5Mt of cement and exported 0.5Mt of this output, according to Avesta. The largest share of exports, 238,300t, was supplied to Uzbekistan, with an additional 227,200t to Afghanistan and 34,100t to Kyrgyzstan. Total cement exports were valued at US$20.5m.
