US shipments see 16% uptick in March

Total shipments for Portland and blended cement, including imports in the USA and Puerto Rico advanced 16 per cent YoY to 9Mt in March 2021, reports the US Geological Survey (USGS). A total of 45 per cent of deliveries was supplied to the leading cement-consuming states – Texas, California, Floria, Georgia and Arizona. Cement exports from Senegal drop 35% in February

Exports of cement from Senegal declined 35.3 per cent MoM in February 2021, according to the country’s national statistics agency, ANSD. When compared with February 2020, exports decreased 32.4 per cent. Domestic sales fell by eight per cent MoM in February 2021 while output from Senegalese cement plants was down by 6.5 per cent in the same period. When compared with the equivalent month of 2020, sales and output improved by 12.5 and 3.1 per cent, respectively.

Puerto Rican market contracts 13% MoM in April

Puerto Rican cement sales declined 13.2 per cent MoM to 1.37m bags, or 58,414t, in April 2021, according to the country’s statistics institute. In April 2020, 451,000 bags, or 19,230t, were sold following going into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Domestic cement production fell in April 2021 to 635,000 bags, or 27,075t, after reaching 771,000 bags, or 32,874t, in the previous month.

Cement dispatches from Peru in April surged to 0.985Mt in April 2021 from a low base of 0.011Mt in April 2020 when the country was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. Iran’s cement market contracted by 24 per cent YoY to 4.5Mt in April 2021, according to the Iranian Cement Association. In April 2020 the country’s demand reached 5.91Mt. Exports of clinker in April 2021 remained stable at 0.76Mt when compared with April 2020 while cement exports increased by 31 per cent YoY to 0.46Mt. Cement sales in Puerto Rico reached 66,941t in March 2021, according to the Puerto Rican Institute of Statistics. This represents a 15.9 per cent MoM increase and the highest since June 2020. When compared with March 2020, sales nearly tripled. Bolivia’s cement consumption slipped 13.3 per cent from 262,895t in February 2020 to 228,018t in February 2021, according to the country’s statistics office, INE. Cement sales in Colombia increased 60.7 per cent to 1.189Mt in March 2021 from 0.74Mt in March 2020, according to DANE, the country’s statistics office. Sales in the retail sector were up 76 per cent YoY while ready-mix concrete companies saw a 47 per cent hike. Construction companies and contractors increased their offtake by 39.6 per cent YoY. Portland cement production in the Dominican Republic increased 23.8 per cent YoY to 1,247,386t in the first quarter of 2021, according to the Asociación Dominicana de Productores de Cemento de Portland (ADOCEM). Iranian cement plants produced 68.3Mt of cement in 2020, according to the Cement Industry Employers’ Association. This represents a capacity utilisation rate of 78.5 per cent. The association expects output in 2021 to rise to more than 70Mt.
